A straight is made up of five cards in sequential order. A flush consists of five cards of the same suit. However, an ace can also be considered a lower-ranking hand.

A backdoor flush is achieved when a player hits the required cards on the turn and river. This is possible when the player has a significant statistical advantage. If this happens, the player is said to have folded. In poker, the best hand is the best possible one at any given moment. When a player raises, the bets may count as part of the pot.

Poker has been played for centuries in various versions. In the 19th century, it was popular in the United States. It appeared in several gaming publications, with most pointing to New Orleans and the Mississippi River as the center of poker activity. Stud Poker became the dominant poker game in the late 19th and early 20th century. However, more recent scholarship suggests that poker has European origins.
